Wild & Beautiful Collection: The Blank Slate Marigold Peplum

It’s an exciting week! Annika from Näh-Connection has released German translations of three popular indie patterns for women – the Marigold Dress and Blouse by Blank Slate Patterns, the Wanderer Tunic by Striped Swallow Designs and the Sanibel Romper and Dress by Hey June Patterns. As part of Annika’s design example team I sewed up all three patterns and will show them to you one by one on the blog this week –  starting with my Marigold Peplum today.

I chose to sew the high-low peplum version with cap sleeves, since I am always in need of office appropriate garments. The dress would obviously be equaly appropriate, but since it’s often cold here and I’m walking to work I’m not wearing dresses that often. It took me a while to decide on a fabric, but ended up using a white Swiss dot Cotton fabric I bought from Rachael from Imagine Gnats. I love how crisp the fabric is, but it doesn’t get as easily wrinkled as some cotton fabrics.

To make the blouse a little bit more unique I  decided to go for black buttons with a little bit of white in the middle and a thin black satin sash instead of elastic. I chose to sew the smallest size and it fits quite well. It’s a little tight around my shoulder/arm area – I’m not quite sure if I needed a little more space around the back or if I feel a little constrained because of the cap sleeves. It makes it a little difficult getting the blouse off again, but I still love wearing it. I made a few minor changes to the pattern: I interfaced one side of the colour to make it a little stiffer and I left a little opening at the lower edge of the casing, just on the left and right of the button placket, to be able to have a sash instead of an elastic. Last but not least I lengthened the bodice about 1″/2,5 cm.

I really like how much different information about sizing is included in the pattern: Length of the bodice, length of the skirt, width of the back and so on – it makes it really easy to adjust the pattern a little just by looking at these numbers and the pattern pieces.

Sewing the Marigold is pretty straight forward and the instructions are clear. I’ve been wearing my blouse several times already and could absolutely imagine making some more blouses and dresses using this pattern. I just need to experiment a little more with the sizing and the cap sleeves to get the perfect fit.

You can buy the pattern in the German translation at a reduced price at the Näh-Connection shop, or, for the non-German speakers, at the Blank Slate Pattern shop. Anyway you should head over to the Näh-Connection blog to see all the other creations being blogged about today – Annika has a roundup of them on the blog every day.
